Looking south from Beach 4 entrance at the beach just prior to filling by the Army Corps of Engineers. The level of the beach was subsequently raised approximatley 10 feet. Pilings are remnants of wooden groins installed early in the 20th century.

In 1995 the Army Corps of Engineers began large scale sand replenishment along the length of the publicly-owned Coney Island beach. The privately owned Sea Gate beach was included because of adverse effects the filling was expected to have on the Sea Gate shoreline.
