After decades of neglect, and in response to warnings that a structural failure was imminent, the New York City Parks Department embarked upon a complete structural rehabilitation of the Parachute Jump in 1992. Dangling parachute guide cables were removed, the sheet metal base of the tower was completely rebuilt, corroded members replaced, foundations strengthened, and the entire tower given a new coat of paint in its original World's Fair color scheme. The tower is shown here during structural work in early 1993.
