The sounds of a typical day at Major Markets on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island. Founded in the 1930's, Major Markets is a throwback to the days when the entire length of Mermaid Avenue, from Stillwell Avenue to Sea Gate, was a bustling retail strip serving a predominently Jewish and Italian population. Major was one of the few survivors the area's downturn in the 1960's and 70's, and, later, the incursion of supermarkets. Operated for decades by James Prince, Major Markets continues to be a busy anchor of the Mermaid Avenue strip.
