In Memoriam: Pastor Debbe Santiago

Pastor Debbe Santiago of the Salt and Sea Mission passed away on February 4th and will be missed by all who knew her. "Debbe Santiago was a saint who helped the helpless, fed the hungry, protected at-risk children, and ministered to the downtrodden of Coney Island," said Coney Island History Project director Charles Denson. "A while back we discussed making a film about the Salt and Sea Mission and I began filming in 2011. Hurricane Sandy, the Mission's relocation, and Pastor Debbe's illness put the project on hold. These are some clips from a sermon at the mission."

Services will be held on February 11th from 12:00pm- 5:00pm, followed by a funeral at 5:00pm at the Salt and Sea Mission at 2417 Stillwell Avenue.. There will be a memorial service at MCU Park at 6:00pm.

To call Pastor Debbe Santiago a saint somehow seems insufficient. Here is a woman who overcame staggering odds, including homelessness and addiction to become a shining light for anyone who came in contact with her. It had been my honor and pleasure to memorialize on video her last three Blessing of the Rides at Deno's Amusement Park in Coney Island. It was always an uplifting occasion to watch this tiny little woman preach her message of love, goodness and generosity, no more so than during what would be her last sermon there. The world is a poorer place without her, but her message will live on! This is her last and most inspirational blessing in 2015.

Debbe was amazing. My husband Jerry Dominguez and myself would work with her to feed the homeless and minister to the poor. My husband has also since passed. What an amazing woman she was and will be so missed. What a friend we have in Jesus to know him and know we will see them once again.

Hey just stopping by And I miss her like it was yesterday I swear this lady had a heart of gold 😞 she was there for me when my mommy died she never left my side ever and I think her for that 😞 and I would never question god on why he take the good people away from us but sweet slumber my purple pastor I love you 😢
