Dorothy moved to Coney Island in 1961 from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. She has also lived in Brighton Beach and Ocean Parkway and remembers "the west side" near Seabreeze Park (now known as Asser Levy Park). She strikes a recurring note of most long-time Coney Island residents: Living in this historic neighborhood was like having "one big family." People got along, neighbors looked out for one another and doors remained unlocked. Her favorite rides included the Scrambler and the swinging cars of the Wonder Wheel. Dorothy would like to see young people being taught about Coney Island's rich history.
