Hawley Hussey

Sea Gate artist, writer, educator and year-round swimmer

Hawley Hussey recounts "getting in the Gate," moving to a beach mansion in Sea Gate in 2001, her Coney Island-inspired art and writings, and swimming year-round.  A member of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club as well as an ephemeral upstart group called the Penguins, Hawley currently swims daily in the ocean off Sea Gate on her own or with friends at sunset.  Among the art and literary projects she talks about are painting a memorial portrait of "Master" (Genaoro Venegas Rivera ) for Ruby's Bar and "The World-Famous Coney Island Break-Up Letters" (2010) and All the Old Romance Retold Exactly the Ancient Way , a collage-novel based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island (2018).
