Artist Leonid Alaverdov, 87, and his family immigrated to the United States from Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1993. After first settling in Bensonhurst, he has lived in O'Dwyer Gardens housing project in Coney Island since 1998. In Baku, Alaverdov worked as an oil and gas equipment engineer and an "artist-constructor." His interest in creating tapestries was sparked by an exhibition of modern tapestries and a visit to a tapestry artist's studio, after which he dived into studying and teaching himself the ancient techniques of this Azerbaijani art form.

Alaverdov talks about his work process, techniques and materials as well as some of the tapestries he has created. When he lived in Baku, the themes of his work were often related to his native city, He says that after moving to New York he began making a lot of tapestries inspired by what he saw in his walks around New York City. "I fell in love with this city," says Alaverdov. "All of this has been reflected in my art, my perception of New York." The artist is a founding member of the Jewish Folk Crafts Guild, a membership organization of artists and craftsmen who have exhibited at Kings Bay Library in Sheepshead Bay, the Jewish Community Center of Bensonhurst, and Touro College in Manhattan.
