Dear Mr. Coney Island...
Do you have any pictures of the old school PS 80. It was on West 18th Street. I went to school there back in 1967. Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for posting this picture of PS 80. I attended PS 80 from 1955 to 1961. It was between West 17th and West 19th Street (there is no West 18th Street) and between Mermaid Avenue and Neptune Avenue. This picture was taken on West 19th Street looking toward Neptune Avenue, almost near Neptune Avenue. I spent many great years there and have tremendous cherished memories from there. The teachers cared and the students were great. I am still in touch with some of the students and my 6th grade teacher. It's simply amazing. I feel so lucky to have attended such a great school at that time. Can you please send this picture to my Email as I would like to forward it? Thank you very much.

My 2 brothers my sister and I went to P.S 80 1967 - 1972

I have pictures of the after school program at PS 80. We think the year is 1952-ish. How can I upload them? Is there an email I can send them to? Does anyone remember Mr. Russo who worked at the after school program?

I was a classmate of Louis Frankel all through our years at PS 80. He is certainly correct...it was a great school, with caring teachers, and lots of fun-loving classmates. Also, growing up in Coney Island was a lot like living at Disney World (well, that may be a slight exaggeration!). The beach was a couple of blocks away, as were the amusement parks and the ballfields at Kaiser Park.

I found a photo of a (perhaps not yours) P.S. 80 1935 class picture inside a classroom. There are a few adults in the picture. I'm trying to determine which PS 80 (where in the country) it would be. I found the photo in Jersey (but they don't have "P.S." there- so I'm guessing NYC somewhere. I'm happy to send a snapshot of it to anyone who wants to try to identify the school.
thanks!

Hi,
I'd like to see your photo. (It's significant to me because I'm writing my memoirs) I attended P.S.80 in the Fall of '48 and Spring of '49. I lived at 2949 West 21 Street.
Thank you, Alex

I too attended PS 80 from 1955 to 1961. The 6th grade teacher must have been Mr.Okin maybe ? who was also mine and my brother and sister's 6th grade teacher. This view is on the 19th street side and there's the deli-candy store next to it. Sadly the last time I was there PS 80 was gone. I have very fond memories of growing up in Coney Island thanks for the memories

I went to P.S.80 School in Coney Island back in 1970, thru 1974 to 1975 until they decided to close the school down and send most of the students went to P.S 324 in Coney Island on 29 & 30th street between Mermaid and Surf ave. Graduated from 6th grade to go to Junior High School, they send me to go to Booty H.S by Kings Hwy, but we moved to Park Slope, So I went to I.S.88 In Park Slope, graduated, went to 10th Grade. Then I went to Bayridge H.S. Good Years.

I believe the 6th grade teacher’s name was Mr. Rankin .
I attended the school in 1962 , the only year I attended public school as my mother was a bilingual teacher at the school .

I went to p.s. 80 from 1970 - 1976. i lived down the block from the school. first on w20th st and then moved to the projects on surf ave. across where ice skating ring. In 76 I moved to New Jersey. I'm writing to see if i could find some that went to the school the same time i did. See if any one posted old school, class photos from those years. I lost all of mine with all the moving I done in the 70's and into the 80's. If anyone out there could help i'll highly appreciate.

Hi Saw your comment on Coney Island History_ have several class photos from 1972-1976 as well as graduation photos taken inside the auditorium and outside the school. Let me know. Take care

Hi-saw you comments regarding PS 80. We also lived in Carey Garden Projects-from 1970-1981. We first lived in the building between Mermaid and Neptune across from Mark Twain and then in the building Between Surf and Mermaid. My Brothers and sister also went to PS 80 from 1970 until it closed down. Brother graduated from there (these are the picture I have of outside the school on 17th street where they have a steel gate and inside the auditorium and some of the classrooms) and sister transferred to PS 95. Let me know if you or anyone would like to exchange pictures.

in the 1970's, I lived on W. 20th street between Mermaid & Neptune, when I first went to PS 80, then when they closed PS 80, I went to PS 324 on Mermaid Ave between 23 & 24 street if I'm not mistaken, We were living on 23rd street between Mermaid & Neptune in the Progects building #3, I graduated from the 6th grade, to go into Junior HS, which then I was supposed to go to Booty HS then, but never went, because my parents moved.

Hi I'm older than all attended from 1950-55 was supposed to go to Mark Twaine Jr High but we moved to Long Island. Thanks for the picture and the info. Any PS 80 students around my time? Does Louis Frankel have a relation Leroy he was in my class. Also interested in info about Jewish Synagogue on Mermaid Ave near where I lived. Tried looking it up on internet got name Shaare Zedek but I don't remember. Coney Island was great simple fun, with roller skates w/keys, we built scooters out of wood boxes, street games and fun. Kids now have Video games,Ipads,Itouch, etc and they are always still bored!

I was in grade 3, 1953-54. Miss Marcus was the teacher. Friends were Helen Kaplan and Geraldine Johansson. Does anyone have class photos which would include Miss Marcus, Helen Kaplan and Geraldine Johansson.? Great school. Lots of fun while learning.

I lived on W 16th Steet between mermaid and Neptune .... Anyone remember Steeplechase ?

I lived on 20th street between Mermaid and Neptune, and I still remember Steeplechase Rides and Astroland Park Nathan's I was raised in Coney Island since 1966 thru 1977, Then Moved to Park Slope in 1977. Good years

Hi! I attended from 1950-55 and also went to Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln. Does anybody have pictures of P.S. 80 from the W. 17th Street side? Across the street was Tanenbaum's Candy Store.
Mr. Harry Okin was our 6th Grade teacher. Sadly, P.S. 80 is gone. It was a great Coney Island school. Lots of fond memories from those days.

the school and the synagogue are both gone p.s.80 was replaced by single family houses. The synagogue was a vacated lot the last time I was there. I went to P.S. 80 in it's last years k to 5 grade then to P.S 90 left Coney in 1968 just after the riots . moved toBensonhurst .loved Coney and west 15 street & Neptune Ave.

Hi would like to know if anyone knows what happened to items from the PS80 library before building was destroyed. My brother and l went there in the mid 60's and there in was a plaque in the library with his name as he died in 1968.

Thanks so much for posting this picture. I also attended this school until 1958 when we moved to Bellport, N.Y. My mother used to work at Tanenbaum's Candy Store for several years. I remember they had the best chocolate soda. A lot of good memories from both places.

Saw your post on the Coney Island History Project. I posted something there about ten years ago. Just happened to fall across it today and saw your post. How are you? Betty?
My wife and I are doing well in South Florida, as are Donna and her husband Vito. They can't go back to Long Island until the pandemic abates. Be well.

Michael

Does anyone remember Mr. Finn who taught 6th grade at PS 80 in the 1950's? If so, he wrote a play called Gulliver in Lilliput. How did the song go?

I was in your class and remember Mr. Finn's Gulliver in Lilliput. I believe Phil Goldberg played Gulliver.
By the way, what's new?

I will sing it for you like I sang it to Margory.
"When we get acquainted,
When we say hello.
It will seem as if we met so many years ago.
Then the fact will hit us.
Suddenly we will know.
We just got acquainted,
(slowly) And • your • wond•er•ful to know."

Yes, I remember Mr. Finn. He was my teacher in Sept. 1957 - June 1958. He wrote a musical play about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. I was one of the singers. It went all the way to the Children's Hour TV show. He was a very talented man. He should l;have produced musical on Broadway. That's how talented he was. Those were the happiest days I remember in PS 80. He also took us all over NYC each month. If we were bad, he took the trip away. We went to the Horn and Harddard cafateria in NY to eat. Like I said he was very talented. I'll never forget him.

I wrote a while back asking for some class photos dating back to 1969 to 1976. I wish I remember some of my teachers names. I remember one day the vice principal came into our 3rd grade class with this humongous video camera. This was like 1972-73. He took video of us. I wonder if that video or any colloection of his video still exist. Anybody remember the prinicial or vice principal name?
You could E mail me @ rambleonbklyn@aol.com. send photos if anyone has any. THANKS

I went to ps 80 for a short time in 1950 did it have a swimming pool I also went to ps 89 for a short time before we moved to the Island

My family grew up on West 17th Street (2853) and my grandmother was the manager of a hotel that stood next door. On the block were several old time italian families who grew grapes that lit up the block with the intoxicating scent during harvest.
Back to PS 80- My brother and myself attended PS 80 and when it was closed, all the kids use to play inside the abandoned school- jumping out windows, sliding down
banisters. My older brother actually slid into pile of glass and slit is hand which required stitches. Good Ole CI- DO OR DIE

I went to PS 80, until they closed ok and it, and they sent me to PS 324 on Mermaid ave between 23and 24 st.

I lived two doors down from that hotel . 2851 west 17th st from 1955-1964 . Any one remember Alice the crossing guard ?

I attended PS 80 from 1953-1959. I enjoyed reading all the comments above and it brought back some great memories. it's funny because the other day I told one of my associates that I remembered all my elementary school teachers from PS 80. Here goes: first grade, Mrs. Block, second grade Mrs. Murphy, third grade Mrs. Baron, fourth grade Mrs. Singer, fifth grade Mrs. Schiller and sixth grade Mrs. Sunshine. I remember buying a ham and cheese sub that was lathered with deli mustard and it was right next to the school on West 19th St and a candy store on West 17th street also PS 80 being right next door to Our Lady of Solace and remembering stories from my friends that if they misbehaved the Nuns would whack them with a ruler. One of my fondest memories was being the captain of the crossing guards when I was in the sixth grade. I used to go to Steeplechase, Raven Hall and Washington baths and the Loews movie theater on Stillwell and Surf Avenues right across from Nathans. I lived on West 24th between Mermaid and Neptune avenues right up the street from Mark Twain JHS. And for the person who mentioned Leroy Frankel, he was actually my older brother's good friend.
Coney Island thanks for the memories.

1955-1959 We lived only a block or two away.

My brother and I went to PS 80 in grades 1-3 in 1968 - 1970. I remember Mrs. Beatriz the first grade teacher and Mrs. Slusky my third grade teacher. Never forget. Great memories.

I have my grandfathers graduation autograph book.
His name was Sam G. Glaser. I'm looking for any photos.

Do you have a yearbook or class roster from 1926?

I found a family photo from 1926. I am trying to figure out if it’s my grandfather’s class or one of his siblings. My father and uncle both recently passed so I’ve no one to ask. Was wondering if you had a yearbook or clsss list? Last name would be Minichino

I attended P.S. 80 from 1941-1946. I passed Our Lady of Solace every school day. It was awesome.

Hi did you know salvatore Mauro from ps 80.he want there from1938 to 1943. He lived on w17 street.

I was looking through my parents belongings a couple years ago and found a class photo from when my mom went to sixth grade at PS-80. Her name at the time was Louise Marsh. Wanted to know if anyone may of known her, she passed away in 2009.

My sister Carol and brother Glen Mead were in the 6 th grade at P.S80 in 1965 .I was in the 3rd grade. When P.S90 was built they sent us there Feb,1965. We lived at 1616 mermaid Ave. we then moved to Rockaway beach in aug,1965. I will ask Carol if she was in your class, my brother Glen recently passed away this past June,

I went to PS 80 - 1943-1948
Then onto Mark Twain JHS.
So many memories, difficult to remember them all!
Mr. Kaiser the principal, I lived on 16th st.

Hi, I attended P.S. 80 65-69, my kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Bass, I remember her fondly, she was such a kind woman. She and Mr. Jenofski (?) the principal at the time are about the only ones I recall. I remember the staircases that lead to the basement lunchroom, and the stage where my kindergarten class had our class photo taken, I still have that photo. I loved reading all the stories here, so many memories. I went to see the school many years back only to find it was gone, very sad yet life goes on.

Thank you,
Antonia

Went to PS 80 in 1959-4th grade teacherMiss Hoffman and principal Mr. Janosky I remember his white hair and how he knew all the students by name.
