Coney Memories and Friends
Hi everyone,
My name is Les Frimerman, I lived in Coney Island from 1943 to 1958. I attended Yeshiva Share Zedeck and Mark Twain. Lived on Surf Ave, 29th street, 30th street and Neptune Ave, like wherever my parents could afford the rent!
Wonderful memories of Huba Huba, Board walk, Bobsled, Thunderbolt, Tornado, Steeplechase, the Bowery, Cyclone, parachute jump and so many friends. I remember Freddie Weintraub, Barry Babich, Harold Feld, Julie Maiman, Jay Turoff, Paul Birnbaum, Gary Zwickerman, Kaplan Sisters, Michael Goodman, Stephen Schwartz, Michael Gilburd, Sheila Esposito, Butch Rothman, Stu Nathanson, Sazzoff Sisters, Eileen Smith, Reina Feller, Stew Feinstein,
Would love to hear from you.

Wow! Brother friends with your friends!
Wow, I remember Freddie Weintraub and Barry! I think Barry lived on 25th St., as I recall. My brother Larry Tessel was great friends them! 'Used to play handball, basketball, etc. Larry & Freddie joined the marines together on the buddy system, but Freddie changed his mind..lol. Larry did become a marine. Does anyone have Freddie or Barry's e-mail, I would absolutely LOVE to write them and tell them on remember them. I was on Freddie shoulders when we walked down to the boardwalk for those fabulous fire words. I remember Barry had small kids at the time, as well. Larry & sister Reba went to Mark Twain. Just another short question - Does anyone remember a candy store on 33rd and Neptune called M & M diner or candy store?
You mentioned my dad Jay...
I am his daughter Jill. How can I help? He is alive and well and Dividing his time between jersey with his girlfriend and SI, he has been enjoying retirement life.

Colin asked about Hubba Bubba
I found a reference to Hubba Bubba from a old candy website. It was an expression used in WW II by GIs who voiced approval "hubba bubba". It became Wrigleys name for bubble gum in 1979 too late to use for the luncheonette. So when a GI went for lunch there he would say hubba bubba if the food was good, I presume.
huba huba
the Huba had the best hamburgers ever. for years I have looked for the recipe. I remember the paper cups of Cole slaw diced and delicious. I remember Shirley the waitress that took care of us. we went for lunch almost every day when we went to Mark Twain Junior high school. the way it was then.... my mother would ask Shirley to give me lunch even if I didn't have money to pay. my mother told Shirley she would be in to pay her later. it was an easy and trusting time. anyway, my husband and I still talk about the Huba. what a special place.
The Huba
Yes! They had the best cole slaw and the best egg creams. Their hamburger steak and mashed potatoes were incredible!
Memories
Yes my name is Gino. I was 4 year old and my dad mom used to take me there they had the best mashed potatoes I remember the chef his name was John I believe I remember. He used to wear a white T-shirt I believe it was the year of 1965 66 by the way I am a gypsy so the questions I'm asking was the chef named John?
Coney Island
Wow what great memories my heart fluttered when I saw the Hubba hubba. And the Yeshiva , the mermaid move house My parents grew up there and I did too It was like Slice in wonderland
Never Forget the Hubba
My mother sent me to the day camp at the YM-YWHA and the bus passed the Huba Huba Luncheonette every day. For so long it felt like a surreal distant memory. It’s so great coming here and seeing so many great memories about it. As very young kids, we thought the name was “funny.”
One thing I didn’t remember at all until reading it above in a comment was the “song.” Someone mentioned the song was the scream Huba Huba Luncheonette over and over. I DO remember doing this with everyone as we rode the bus past it. I didn’t know others did as well.
Thanks to the relatives of owners and workers for creating even a name that was amazing, memorable and unique. I wish the world still had the passion to come up with memorable things like this you wouldn’t forget. I never ate in the Huba Huba. But I’ll never forget if.
Scott Kroll
Anyone remember Scott?
Remember Me?
Does anyone remember me. I remember Saul Grabia, his cousin Marilyn and both of their parents. Les Frimerman, I also remember you and your twin brothers. I lived on 30th street, a couple of houses down from your apartment building. In 1960, I moved to the projects on Surf Ave.
West 24th Street
I grew up on West 24th Street. My Aunt would take me to Hubba Hubba. I tasted a cherry coke for the first time. Went to the Mermaid theater and saw West Side Story. I remember Gitler’s as they were family friends. I went to the Yeshiva for grades 3 and 4. My teachers were Mrs. Franklin and Mr. Elk. We moved to Flatbush in 1966. I loved Coney Island. So many wonderful memories.
24th Street
I grew up on that block from 1957-1964, but since your name is not familiar you must have lived between Mermaid and Neptune. I lived beteeen Mermaid and Surf Avenue. It was certainly a great time for us. I remember the deli at the corner and Joe’s Luncheonette also at the corner on the other side. How can we forget Sam’s Toyland selling Tops and Duncan Yo- Yo’s.

Sharei Zedek memories.
Does anyone remember having to wear white shirts at the assembly or the fire drills where we had to walk down the stairs in the back? It was gated.
Greenwald Deli
They were on 30th or 31st on Mermaid, Great deli. Anyone remember Gelbrow’s, John’s Bargain Store , Hirsch’s Bycycles, Pete’s Fish Market, Levine’s And Zwitman’s Drug Store? How about Gitler’s on 25th Street and Steinfeld’s store at the corner of 24th and Mermaid Avenue. They both sold heroes. The Yeshiva gang would go in to Steinfeld’s there and get one for 25 cents. It made Rabi Brun of Sharei Zedek crazy!
Notable alumni ?
Hello, love this site. I am doing a project and looking for stories of notable alumni of Yeshiva Sheri Zedek.
Hubs huba
For me, the hub had the best hamburgers ever. For years, I have tried to find the recipe. I could see the tall, dark haired gentleman behind the counter. I always sat at a table with my friends, and Shirley was our waitress. My mom came in and told Shirley, please if tina doesn’t have money, give her lunch and I will come in and pay you And they both honored that I would get hamburger french fries and a Coke for $.45 and then it went up to $.50 I guess this tells you how old I am. The Harbour is one of my best memories. We were lucky to have it so close to Mark Twain junior high school.
Punch ball and stick ball in the street
We used to play punchball, regardless of traffic. Nearly got hit by a car legging out a double during a game. Played stick ball against the side wall of the Royal Farm on 22nd St., and little league in Kaiser Park. Went to P.S. 80, Mark Twain and Tech. Man...those were the days. Lost my best friend, Steven Chibnick (W. 21st Street) a couple of years ago to cancer.
