Alexander Vindman was born in 1975 in Soviet Ukraine and emigrated at age four with his family to Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach. He shares memories of growing up and going to school in Brighton, being photographed with his twin brother by the photographer Carol Kitman, and his father's decision to help his sons assimilate to life in America by moving to a more diverse Brooklyn neighborhood in the 1980s.

Alexander Vindman is a retired United States Army lieutenant colonel who was the Director for European Affairs for the United States National Security Council until 2020. Vindman is currently director for the think tank the Institute for Informed American Leadership. His memoir Here, Right Matters: An American Story (2023) was a NY Times bestseller.
